The most common difference between in-person and online EMDR is delivering bilateral or dual attention movements. EMDR relies on these movements to accelerate desensitisation and adaptation of negative memories. In in-person therapy, you may watch the therapist’s hand movement or light bar, audio sounds or use tappers. When EMDR therapy is delivered online, your eyes will follow an image on your screen; you may also use audio sounds and your own hands to tap.
Online EMDR therapy is highly effective in treating various disorders, including trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder. In November 2021, this first in the world study using real-world practice data showed that EMDR is as effective when delivered remotely as face to face.
